Learn Design Principles

Whether it is graphic design, website design, or SVG design, all designs are built on several key principles. This course defines each principle, shows examples of the principles in action, and offers relevant tutorials.

Take a look at the full course outline.

1: Introduction

A quick introduction tells you about the course format, invites you to join the private Facebook help group, defines a SVG file, and finishes with a challenge.

2: Alignment

The course starts easy with the principle of alignment – something you are likely familiar with. But we dive into how to use the alignment functions in Silhouette Studio, I provide a printable layout idea resource, and we end with a challenge.

3: Repetition

Next, we look at repetition. I talk everything from fonts and colors to patterns and line weights. There’s a quick tutorial to create a repetitive pattern, a font guide, then a challenge to finish out the section.

4: Balance

I share information about three types of balance you’ll likely encounter when designing SVGs, we design a mandala from scratch, and finish with a challenge.

5: Proximity

Proximity can be difficult to understand in design, but we go through it step by step with examples in a way that you’ll understand. This section finishes with that familiar challenge.

6: Contrast

In this section, we look at contrast and contrast with patterns. The section finishes with two tutorials and a design challenge.

7: Color

We touch briefly on color in SVG design, but spend some time showing you that you can actually draw (even if you think you can’t)! Of course, the challenge finishes out this section.

8: Negative Space

This section of the course looks at negative space in two ways: using negative space as the design and eliminating unwanted negative space. As the designer, you’ll figure out which style you prefer.

9: Visual Hierarchy

I talk about visual hierarchy in this section of the class – and why it matters when designing SVG files.

10: Takeaways

Finally, we wrap up the course with a printable that summarizes the important points of the course.
